Speech therapy early intervention (EI) is a program that supports the growth and development of children with disabilities. It can be provided anywhere, at home or in child care.

The Early Intervention process is designed to reflect the priorities and values of the family and the community. All of the individuals involved will work collaboratively to meet the needs of the child.

An Individualized Family Service Plan (IFSP) will be developed as part of the process. This plan is an outline of services that will be offered to the child. It is created by the parents and will be sensitive to the family’s culture and values.

To ensure that the child is eligible for early intervention services, the parents must provide their consent. They also must sign a permission form before health insurance or private insurance will be used.

Once an evaluation is completed, the service coordinator will contact the family and work with them to develop a plan. This plan will include the services the child will receive, as well as how they will be accessed. Depending on the needs of the child, other members of the team may participate.

Speech Therapy and Early Childhood Development

If the child is eligible for early intervention, the service coordinator will work with the family to identify a local agency to provide evaluation services. The agency will then contact the parents to schedule an appointment. A visit to the family’s home is a common part of the evaluation.

During this visit, the service coordinator will work with the family and other caregivers to help them learn how to support the child’s development. The visit is designed to be fun and exciting for the child, and will include activities that are both enjoyable and challenging.
